Section 5 Teen Program

at Co-op City


There’s something for everyone at the Section Five Teen Center! We offer a wide variety of activities for the teenagers of Section Five in Co-op City. Joining the Section Five Teen Center is a great choice for any teenager who wants to spend their non-school hours meeting new people, learning new things and developing new interests or hobbies. We offer 13-18 year olds a variety of activities free of charge, six days a week. The best part of the Section Five Teen Center is everything is FREE!!!

 

 

Anyone interested in becoming a member must complete the following:

  • Meet the age requirement-13-18 years old.
  • Return a completed application and have the information verified.
  • Attend the program orientation.
  • Pick two structured activities and maintain 75% attendance.

The Arts 

 

Cartoon

Monday 6:30-8:30 P.M.

 

Art Design

Tuesday 6:30-8:30 P.M.

Students get an introduction to the materials, tools and techniques of multidimensional art. 

 

Neighborhood Art Project

Wednesday 4:30-6:30 P.M.

Young neighborhood artist collaborate on projects and display work throughout the neighborhood.

 

 

COOKING

Our new state of the art kitchen grants students the total cooking experience. Students work in teams to prepare selected recipes ranging from nutritious meals and desserts. We teach menu creation, food preparation and kitchen management.

 

*A special schedule will be provided each season.


 

DANCE

A unique blend of hip-hop dancing and stepping delivers a dance class with an edge. Our dance program is high powered, creative and loads of fun! Participants learn more than some cool moves. They learn technique, stage presence, costume design and much more!

Drumming

Practicing authentic traditional African rhythms is not just a good way to blow of steam. It’s also a good way to build coordination and concentration. Students explore African heritage while learning how to use different drums and perform different rhythms.

Tuesday 7:00-9:00 P.M.

 

 

SPORTS

Physical activity is a major concern in the health of children today. Our sports programs are fun, interactive and provide a great source of exercise.

 

Fundamentals of Basketball

Thursday & Friday 7:00-8:30 P.M.

This class is for the 13-15 year old looking to develop the skills to play on the next level. Dribbling, passing, shooting and team play are all part of this learning experience. There are tournaments, drills and free play. Boys and girls are invited to participate. 

 

Open Gym

Thursday & Friday 8:30-10:00 P.M.

The open gym is for teens 16-18 looking to get and stay in shape. Full court basketball is offered nightly and everyone must be a member and wear appropriate clothing for basketball. 

 

Weights and Calisthenics

Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-6:00 & Wednesday 7:00-8:30 P.M. 

This class is for teens looking to improve their strength and agility through muscle conditioning and calesthetics. Students learn gym safety, proper technique and how to use a routine that includes warming-up and stretching. This activity is for boys and girls. 

 

Flag football

Saturday 2:30-4:30 P.M.

Teens looking to learn, play and compete will enjoy flag football on Saturdays. Flag football is one of the more popular sporting activities at the Teen Center. Participants will learn the basics of catching, throwing, route running and de-flagging. Competitive play also happens on site and at other locations. 

 

Softball

Summers

The Section Five Teen Center offers softball instruction in pitching, hitting and the basic principles and techniques of softball. Teens enjoy competitive play and this activity is for boys and girls.

 

 

DISCUSSION GROUPS

Today’s teenagers are faced with many social and personal pressures. Our discussion groups are used to discuss hot topics and to talk about everyday teen issues. In our Girl Talk group, the young ladies of the Teen Center are able to share stories, get advice and simply be girls. The Men’s Group addresses many of the social dilemmas and expectations in society for young men The discussion groups serve as a platform to help our youth survive these challenging years.


Money Matters 

Tuesday 7:30-8:30 P.M. 

This program is uniquely designed to teach financial literacy to teenagers.  Students engage in various exercises focusing on understanding credit, savings, wants vs. needs and positive spending habits. With more young people becoming power players in the business world, members take the first steps toward entrepreneurship.  If you think you have what it takes to start your own business, this is where you need to be.

 

 

 

Education

 

 

Computer Technology

Monday and Wednesday

4:30-6:30 P.M. 

Students learn to care for their PC during these hands on lessons. Students learn to install programs, remove viruses and do minor repairs to PC components. 

 

 

Open Lab

Tuesday 6:30-7:30

The open lab gives our members time to surf the web, respond to e-mails or send instant messages to friends. Some teens search and listen to new music, while others gather information for school projects and things to do.

 

 

HOMEWORK HELP

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

4:00-6:00 P.M.

 

School isn’t always easy. At the Section Five Teen Center education comes first. On our lower level we have a room known as the Quiet Space. In this room participants are able to find assistance with homework, school projects and soon tutoring in various subjects. All of the basic school supplies are provided as well as small group instruction. We encourage parents to stop by and meet our Quiet Space staff and discuss their teen's academic needs and contribute to a plan of action. Members can also use the Quiet Space simply as a place to study, read a book or kick back and enjoy some quiet time.


LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

Our Leadership Council is comprised of neighborhood teens interested in making a difference at the Teen Center and in their community. Our members have demonstrated the ability to lead their peers by example and are not afraid to be different. They exhibit a sincere concern for change. As the voice of the membership they participate in meetings, plan activities and evaluate events. Areas of focus include public speaking, running meetings and the design of community service projects.
